N.H. Rep Delmar Burridge proposes open carry ban
Senator Saslaw bemoans his impotence over gun control
As Minority Leader, Virginia Senator Dick Saslaw (D-35th) may be the most powerful Democrat in the Virginia General Assembly but, try as he might, he cannot seem to strip those pesky citizens of their gun rights.
Last week at a legislative forum held at Alexandria City Hall, he spent a great deal of time complaining about his inability to “get sensible gun control.”
Saslaw, who represents Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County, specifically called out the Virginia Citizens Defense League as the force behind much of the pro-gun successes in Virginia. He noted that, of the 39 pro-gun bills last session, the NRA was involved in only 4 and VCDL shepherded the rest.
DC born Saslaw has not made any secret of his disdain for gun owners in the past. Perhaps most famously, he was overheard by yours truly calling them ‘the cast of deliverance‘ during the 2008 legislative session.

Senator Deeds may oppose VA state agency preemption bill
Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds, longtime ally of gun owners, has expressed pessimism over the needs for a state agency preemption bill in Virginia, at least as far as colleges and universities are concerned. Senator Deeds told NBC News that he “doesn’t see the big hand of the General Assembly being necessary to override the Board of Visitors in that situation.”
In making such a statement, Senator Deeds appears to be taking the side of college and university administrators who are almost completely exempted from Virginia’s Administrative Process Act under current Virginia law.
Virginia’s public colleges and universities have been taking advantage of this ‘loophole’ to pass numerous regulations against campus carry by faculty, staff, adult students, and visitors with carry permits.
As I have noted repeatedly in my articles, state agency preemption remains one of the most desperately needed reforms to Virginia’s firearms laws. Thankfully, we have the Virginia Citizens Defense League to fight for our rights in the General Assembly and to gently remind Senator Deeds, who most assuredly is a friend to gun owners, just how important it is that our students not be rendered helpless again.

Sportscaster Peter King claims NFL players are turning in guns
On NBC Sports, Peter King has claimed that at least 7 NFL players have turned in personally owned firearms to team security officers since Jovan Belcher’s murder of his girlfriend and subsequent suicide.
He even quotes one player, who turned in a reported 8 guns, as having said that “I don’t trust myself with these guns in the house, please take them away.”
However, I remain skeptical.
Since such reports are presumably based upon private conversations with team staff, they are completely impossible to verify. Such reports seem entirely too convenient for an NFL organization that is reeling for the second time in as many weeks over the death of a player, this time by drunk driving.
If there truly are that many NFL players who have such little control over their emotional state then perhaps the NFL needs to review their substance abuse policies instead of worrying about legally owned firearms.

Will Virginia Republicans turn their back on gun owners in 2013?
When the elections are in full swing and your phone is ringing off the hook with fundraising calls, those on the other end of the line are quick to point out the strong support for gun rights that is one of the hallmark issues in the GOP platform.
“If we have all three branches of state government under Republican control, then we can finally pass the important pro-gun legislation that the Democrats have been blocking.” said one determined operative to me last year as they pleaded for me to bring out my checkbook once again.
But now that Virginia’s government is completely controlled by Republicans, there is suddenly a sense of hesitation to move forward on issues that gun rights advocates have been working on for years such as state agency preemption and college carry.
The Republicans may be correct in assuming that gun owners have nowhere else to go for pro-gun votes but what they seem to be forgetting is that votes are one thing and donations are another.
We will have to see how gun owners are treated in the upcoming session to determine how our dollars will be best spent in upcoming statewide elections.

Colorado gun store succeeds by specializing in women gun owners
Tri-Lakes Shooter’s Supply in Monument Colorado is doing well and they attribute much of their success to the burgeoning number of women shooter to whom they cater.
Long gone is the stereotype of the male gun owner. As women flock to the shooting sports and to an awareness of self-defense issues, stores like Tri-Lakes are working to make sure that women are warmly welcomed.
After all, as Tri-Lakes President Angela Robbins notes, “they’re better shooters, more accurate.” Us men better watch out. We have competition and that is a very good thing for gun rights and the gun industry as a whole.

Concealed carry passes one year mark in Wisconsin without incident
Over a year has passed since concealed carry became law in Wisconsin, and despite the increasingly shrill ‘blood-in-the-streets’ predictions of the anti-gunners, nothing could be further from the truth.
Since November 1, 2011, almost 140,000 permits have been issued and yet local law enforcement such as East Troy Police Chief Boyes says that “We have not had any issues … Nothing would even appear any different.”
As America continues it’s inevitable march toward nationwide constitutional carry, perhaps the anti-gunners will eventually come to accept reality … that armed, law-abiding citizens are a public policy benefit.

WVU Mountaineer mascot ordered to stop hunting with university-issued musket
The West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot dresses in buckskins, wears a coonskin cap, and carries a musket. As it turns out, it is a fairly effective hunting rifle.
The man behind the mascot, Jonathan Kimble, filmed himself shooting a bear with the university-issued musket last Monday and anti-hunting activists immediately went on the attack.
The University has demanded that Kimble no longer hunt with the university-issued musket. So much for the vaunted spirit of the Mountaineers.
